Burbank

With its production studios and equestrian past, Burbank is an eclectic mix of past and present with a little movie history thrown in. The city is named for Dr. David Burbank, a real estate investor who was instrumental in the growth of the area in the late 1880s. The aviation and entertainment industries moved into Burbank in the 1920s. Walt Disney’s studio was built in 1939 and Disney continues to be a major employer in the area. Once dubbed the “Media Capital of the World,” Burbank hosts many major entertainment and production companies including NBC and Warner Brothers. Burbank is also the home of the Bob Hope Airport, which offers an alternative to those hoping to avoid LAX traffic.

Real Estate:  Burbank lays claim to a wide variety of real estate including single-family homes, townhouses, condominiums, and apartments. The Burbank Rancho neighborhood attracts horse lovers. Many homes in this area were built in the 1940s and 1950s and horse trails are located just a few blocks away. Homes in this area are zoned to allow horses on the property. Magnolia Park has a small-town feel with shopping and restaurants clustered along Magnolia Boulevard and many homes in the area were built during the post-war boom when World War II veterans moved to the area.

Community Life:  The Los Angeles Equestrian Center is a draw for those interested in horseback riding. It offers boarding, training, horse shows, shopping, banquet facilities, riding lessons and trail rides.  The Burbank portion of the Chandler Bikeway is a two-mile bikeway within the former Chandler Boulevard railroad right-of-way and includes several public art installations.  Johnny Carson Park, named after the legendary host of “The Tonight Show,” includes trails for joggers and dog walkers as well as a playground and a fitness course that challenges exercisers to perform the recommend activity at each stop along the trail. Burbank maintains a close connection to its past. Thrift store and antique shopping is ample in Burbank and there are lots of dining options with a retro sensibility.

Education: The city is served by the Burbank Unified School District which has been ranked as one of the most high-achieving competitive school districts in the Los Angeles area. There are also local private schools including the Bellarmine-Jefferson High School and St. Robert Bellarmine Elementary School.

Transportation: Burbank is conveniently located with access to the 5 and 134 freeways. The BurbankBus offers four local routes throughout the city and connects to Metro and other regional transportation options.

Local Attractions: Entertainment is a popular draw in Burbank. It is located near Universal Studios and backstage tours are available at NBC and the Warner Brothers Studios. Downtown Burbank is a popular shopping and dining destination. The Starlight Bowl hosts a summer concert series that offers the perfect chance to pack a picnic and enjoy entertainment under the stars. The Gordon R. Howard Museum operated by the Burbank Historical Society includes an 1887 Victorian house, a memorabilia building that includes displays from Lockheed Aviation’s history in the city, and a vintage vehicle building displaying classic cars.
